Managing Sjögren’s Disease

Sjögren’s disease is an autoimmune condition that typically causes dry eyes and dry mouth. In some cases, it can also lead to other systemic symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, and skin rashes.

We work closely with our patients to prepare a personalized treatment plan tailored to their individual needs. Contact us to schedule your appointment today.

Diagnosing Sjögren’s Disease

Diagnosing Sjögren’s disease can involve blood tests, comprehensive eye exams, imaging tests, and a review of your health history.

Our team combines clinical experience with diagnostic imaging tests such as lab work featuring advanced ophthalmic technology in order to get a complete picture of your medical history and treatment options.

A Closer Look at Sjögren’s Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of Sjögren’s disease can vary and they can include:

  • Burning, redness, or gritty feeling in the eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue
  • Dry, itchy skin

What Causes Sjögren’s Disease?

Sjögren’s disease is an autoimmune disease which means something is triggered in your immune system to attack healthy cells. This attack on your healthy cells can damage your eyes’ tear system and your mouth’s salivary glands.

Factors that can play a role in Sjögren’s disease include:

  • Genetics
  • Environmental factors
  • Sex hormones (the condition affects women more than men)
  • Viral infections

What Are the Management & Treatment Options?

While there is no cure for Sjögren’s disease, our team at Watson Dry Eye Center can help you manage it and relieve symptoms through treatment. Along with our other dry eye treatments, we will prepare a customized treatment plan around your dry eye issues.

Artificial Tears

Over-the-counter artificial tear solutions can help moisturize dry eyes. These artificial tears are designed to provide relief from irritation and discomfort.

Eye drops can add moisture to your eye surface when your tears aren’t high quality enough to properly do it on their own. At Watson Dry Eye Center, we prescribe Restasis and Xiidra eye drops, depending on your specific needs.
