Effective Dry Eye Relief is Here

Good quality tears keep your eyes hydrated, healthy, and free from irritation. When you don’t produce tears properly, you can experience symptoms of dry eye disease which can severely impact your eye health and overall well-being.

LipiFlow is a non-invasive, highly-effective treatment option for those suffering from dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. It’s one of the many treatment options available at Watson Dry Eye Center. Get in touch with our team to find out if it’s the right treatment for you.

What is Meibomian Gland
Dysfunction?

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the primary causes of dry eye disease. Understanding MGD begins with knowing how tears are structured. The tear film has three layers:

  • The outer lipid layer prevents your tears from evaporating too quickly
  • The middle aqueous layer keeps the eye surface moisturized and healthy
  • The inner mucin layer helps tear film stick to the eye surface

The meibomian glands produce an oil called meibum, an essential part of the tear film’s lipid layer. Your meibomian glands can become blocked, preventing meibum from joining your tear film and reducing the lipid layer’s effectiveness.

MGD can cause tears to evaporate too quickly, leaving your eyes dry, itchy, and irritated.

How Does LipiFlow Work?

Before treatment, your doctor will complete a tear film analysis and a gland imaging test to examine the current health of your meibomian glands.

During LipiFlow treatment, the device simultaneously heats and adds pressure to the meibomian glands to gently loosen blockages in your meibomian glands, allowing them to flow freely and keep your tear film healthy.

Is LipiFlow Right for You?

Dry eye disease is a common eye condition that affects more than 16 million Americans. While meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of dry eye, other factors can lead to dry eye, such as:

  • Dry environment
  • Eye allergies
  • Dehydration
  • Smoking
  • Contact lens misuse
  • Vitamin A deficiency
  • Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency
