Understanding Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction, also known as MGD, is a common eye condition in which the meibomian glands in the eyelids become blocked, resulting in discomfort and issues like dry eye disease

At Watson Dry Eye Center, we offer a variety of treatments for MGD, including diagnostic tests, at-home remedies, and in-office therapies. We work closely with our patients to address their unique needs and take their lifestyle, medical history, and severity of symptoms into account.

The Symptoms of MGD

The meibomian glands are responsible for secreting an oily substance that helps stabilize and protect the tear film on the surface of the eye. When these glands malfunction, the tear film is not protected, leading to irritation, dryness, and other unpleasant symptoms.

Common signs and symptoms of MGD can include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Excessive tearing
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light

Treating MGD

After we diagnose MGD, we can help find the comprehensive treatment plan that works for you. Dr. Watson and the rest of the team use innovative technology to help you find relief from your MGD symptoms.

IPL Therapy

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy has been used to successfully reduce the symptoms of MGD by unblocking the meibomian glands and promoting healthy tear production. IPL works by emitting a specific wavelength of light to target the affected area in order to loosen any blockages in the meibomian glands.

The procedure is noninvasive, requires no downtime, and typically takes no more than an hour.

LipiFlow is an innovative therapy designed to help reduce the symptoms of MGD by restoring healthy meibomian gland function. The procedure involves inserting a device into the eyelids to apply precise temperatures and therapeutic massage across the entire eyelid margin.

LipiFLow helps to soften and melt obstructions in the meibomian glands, allowing them to express their secretions more freely.

BlephEx is an in-office procedure for treating MGD by removing debris from the eyelid margins. The BlephEx procedure involves gently exfoliating the affected area with a specialized device designed to remove bacteria and other debris from the eyelids’ oil glands.
