What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease is a condition resulting in symptoms and signs of:

  • Burning
  • Stinging
  • Itching eyes
  • Computer eye strain
  • Frequent lid infections (sties)
  • Light sensitivity
  • Contact lens discomfort
  • Fluctuating
  • Bluttery vision
  • Eyelids stuck together upon waking
  • General ocular discomfort

Over 80 million people suffer from the disease, with rates rising every year.

What Causes Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease results from two conditions, each of which causes inadequate moisture on the surface of the eye.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: Healthy meibomian glands secrete a protective oil layer that prevents tear evaporation and dry eyes. When obstructed, these glands are unable to produce normal oil. Factors such as the environment, the aging process, hormonal changes, medications, inadequate blinking, poor diet and systemic diseases such as arthritis cause gland dysfunction.

Blepharitis: A chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of bacterial debris along the lid and lash lines. Over time, chronic inflammation leads to reduced tear gland performance.

Who Has Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease affects people of all ages—teens, adults, and seniors. Those who are at greater risk are those:

  • Who wear contacts
  • Spend significant amount of time on computers
  • Their cell phones
  • Apply eye makeup daily
  • Have rosacea
  • Have been on Accutane

What Are My Treatment Options?

Because the causes of your Dry Eye Disease are often complex and multi-faceted, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. We are proud to offer a range of diagnostic tools and treatments that will help us deliver optimal results given your needs.

IPL

IPL has been in use for many years to reduce or eliminate skin discolorations, such as brown spots, age spots, broken blood vessels, and rosacea.

Rosacea

A fairly common inflammatory skin condition that affects a whopping 415 million people worldwide.

Dry Eyes

A condition that leaves your eyes perennially dry, itchy, and scratchy, and can even cause blurry vision.

Itchy Eyes

Chronic itchy eyes are a severe problem for many adults, leading to excessive rubbing, vision strain, and daily distraction.

LipiFlow

LipiFlow works to remove these blockages to promote healthier balance in your tears and frustration-free contact lens experience.

Blepharitis

An inflammation of your eyelids. What’s not so simple is the number of problems that can lead to blepharitis.

Red Eye

It’s not uncommon to wake up with red eyes after a poor night’s sleep or experience angry, irritated eyes when debris gets in them, but chronic red eyes may signal a larger problem

Skin Tightening

There are two main conditions that affect the function and appearance of your eyelids, both of which cause laxity of your eyelids and an increased risk of dry eye disease.
